理論とは、ある現象や事実を系統的に説明するための原理や考え方の体系のことです。科学や哲学、社会学など様々な分野で、観察や実験、論理的な検討に基づいて構築されます。十分な証拠に支えられた説明にも、まだ検討中の仮説的な考えにも文脈によって使われます。
A theory is a set of ideas used to explain why something happens or how something works. It is often based on facts, study, or observation, but it may not be fully proven. People use this word in science, education, and general discussion.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
theory はまず theory and practice（理論と実践）の組み合わせで覚えると定着しやすい語です。practice が実際にやることなら、theory は「なぜそうなるかを説明する考えの枠組み」。scientific theory（科学理論）のように、ただの思いつきより体系だった説明に使われます。似た語の theorem は数学の「定理」で別物。in theory は「理屈の上では」という頻出表現なので一緒に覚えると使い分けやすいです。
Remember `theory` with the common pair `theory and practice`. If `practice` is doing, `theory` is the idea behind the doing. Also link `in theory` = "on paper," and do not confuse it with `theorem`, which is a math word.

theory の語源・成り立ち Etymology
theory はラテン語経由でギリシャ語 theoria「観察・思索」に由来し、動詞 theorein「見る」が土台。theater や theorem も同根で、理論とは空論ではなく、よく見て得た見通しだという感覚が残る。
Theory came into English through Latin from Greek theoria, meaning "viewing" or "contemplation." It is based on the verb theorein, "to look at" or "observe." The idea later shifted from careful looking and thinking to a general system of thought. English words like theater and theorem come from the same Greek root.
