桜の木になる小さく丸い果実。一般に赤や黄色で、甘みとほどよい酸味がある。生で食べるほか、ジャム、菓子、ジュースなどにも使われる。英語では果物そのもののほか、色や模様の名として使われることもある。

cherry の語源・成り立ち Etymology
cherry は古フランス語 cherise を経て、ラテン語 cerasum、さらにギリシャ語 kerasos にさかのぼる果物名です。cerise も同根で、英語では語末の -s が複数形と感じられて cherry という単数が生まれたため、語形自体に聞き違いの歴史が残っています。
"Cherry" came from Old French "cherise," from Latin "cerasum," and earlier Greek "kerasos," all names for the fruit. In English, the final "-s" of the French form was wrongly understood as a plural ending. Because of that, English created the singular form "cherry," so the word itself shows a small history of reanalysis.
