「ski」はノルウェー語 ski から英語に入った語で、さらに古ノルド語 skith「割った木片・板」にさかのぼる。skier や skiing はもちろん、skid も同系とされ、雪の上を細長い板で滑る道具だと思うと、形と役目がそのまま名になった語だと腑に落ちる。
