横滑り

車や自転車などが急停止や路面の凍結、ぬれた路面によってタイヤのグリップを失い、制御しにくいまま滑ること、またその滑りそのものを指す。特に進行方向からずれて横や斜めに流れる危険な状態について使われる。
A skid is a sudden slide, especially when a car or other vehicle loses grip on the road. It can also mean the mark left by tires after sliding. The word is common in driving and accident contexts.

ski を知っているとつかみやすい語で、地面をしっかりつかまず“つるっ”と流れる感覚を持つと覚えやすいです。単なる slide より、車や自転車がブレーキ・雨・凍結でコントロールを失って横や斜めに流れる場面で出やすいのが skid。a car went into a skid, skid on ice, skid marks のように「タイヤがグリップを失う」状況と結び付けると定着します。slip は人が足を滑らせる場面にも広く使えますが、skid は乗り物の横滑り寄りです。
`Skid` feels close to the smooth sliding idea of `ski`, which can help you remember it. It is especially used for cars or bikes losing control on ice or a wet road, as in `go into a skid` or `skid on ice`. Compared with `slip`, `skid` is more about vehicles sliding sideways.

skidは古ノルド語skid「割った木片・そりの板」にさかのぼり、もとは滑るための板を指した語です。そこから「横滑り」の意味が生まれ、slideやskiとも近い発想で、滑る動きが語の核だと見えてきます。
Skid comes from Old Norse skith, meaning a split piece of wood or a plank. It first referred to wooden pieces used for sliding or supporting movement. From that, the word developed the idea of slipping sideways, which connects it in sense to words like ski and slide.
