decideはラテン語decidereに由来し、de-「切り離して」+cidere「切る」と分けられます。選択肢を断ち切って一つに定める感覚が「決める」なので、incisionやpreciseにも同じ「切る」語根が見えます。
Decide comes from Latin decidere, from de- "off" and caedere "to cut." The original image is cutting off other possibilities. From that, the word came to mean settling on one choice; precise and incision also come from roots connected with cutting.
