agency の語源・成り立ち Etymology
agency は agent に名詞化接尾辞 -cy が付いた語で、さらにラテン語 agere「動かす・行う」にさかのぼる。act や agenda も同根で、代理店とは物事を実際に動かす働きや組織だと見えてくる。
Agency was formed from agent with the noun ending -cy. Agent goes back to Latin agere, meaning "to do," "drive," or "set in motion." So the word first suggested active doing or the power to act, and then came to mean an organization or force that carries things out. Related English words include act and agenda.
