company は古フランス語 compaignie を経て後期ラテン語 companio にさかのぼり、com-「共に」+ panis「パン」が語の芯です。もともと「パンを分け合う仲間」だったものが、人の集団や組織を表すようになり、仕事や商売のために集まった組織として「会社」の意味になりました。
