company は古フランス語 compaignie を経て後期ラテン語 companio にさかのぼり、com-「共に」+ panis「パン」が語の芯です。もともと「パンを分け合う仲間」だったので、companion や pantry を思うと、会社がまず「同じ食卓の人々」から来たと分かります。
