コンピュータやスマートフォンを動かすためのプログラムや、その関連データの総称。機械そのものを指す hardware と対比して使われる。OS、アプリ、業務システムなど広い範囲を含み、用途に応じて install, update, run などの語とよく結びつく。
Software is the programs and digital systems that run on a computer, phone, or other device. It is used in technology and everyday life when talking about apps, operating systems, and computer tools. Unlike hardware, software is not the physical machine.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
software は hardware と必ず対で覚えると強い。hard が「手で触れる機械本体」、soft は「画面の中で動く見えない仕組み」と置くと、単なるカタカナ語で終わらない。program は1本のプログラムを指すことが多いが、software は OS・アプリ・業務システムまで含む広い総称。install/update software, software company などの組み合わせも頻出。個別のアプリ名より一段大きい箱の語で、基本は不可算名詞として a software とは言いにくい。
Remember it with the opposite word `hardware`. Hardware is the physical machine, while software is the programs and systems inside it. Also note the pattern `install software` or `update software`, and remember it is usually uncountable.

20世紀半ばに hardware に対する語として作られた比較的新しい語。soft は「柔らかい」ではなく、物理的な機械ではない無形の部分を指し、program や system と並ぶ情報技術の基本語になった。
Software is a modern word, created in the mid-20th century in contrast with hardware. Here soft does not mean physically soft, but something non-physical or less fixed. The word developed as computing needed a clear name for programs and systems rather than the machine itself.
