episode はギリシャ語 epeisodion に由来し、epi-「付け加えて」+ eisodos「入り込み」(eis-「中へ」+ hodos「道」) が核。hodos は method や exodus と同根なので、『エピソード』は『話の道筋に途中から入る一場面』だと見える。
Episode comes from Greek epeisodion, which meant something like "an addition" or "a thing coming in besides."
