staplerはstaple「留め金」+ -er「道具」でできた語です。stapleは古英語stapol「柱・杭」にさかのぼり、もとは何かを打ち込んで固定する発想でした。だからstaplerは紙を一点で留める道具だと腑に落ち、stapleやstaplingも同系です。
Stapler comes from staple plus the tool ending -er. Staple goes back to Old English stapol, meaning "post" or "peg," and it first referred to something fixed firmly in place. From that idea of fastening, stapler came to mean a tool that attaches papers with metal staples.
