together は古英語 togædere にさかのぼり、to- と gædere「一つ所に」が合わさった語で、文字どおり「同じ場所へ寄せて」です。gather や gathering も同根で、together が静かな「一緒」より「集まって一つになる」感覚を含むと見えてきます。
