アラビア語 sifr「空のもの」が、中世ラテン語 zephirum、イタリア語 zero を経て英語に入った語です。位取りで「何もない場所」を示す印だったと知ると、同語源の cipher が「暗号・ゼロ」を意味する理由も見えてきます。
Zero came into English through Italian zero, from Medieval Latin zephirum, which came from Arabic sifr, meaning "empty" or "nothing." It first referred to the sign for an empty place in a number system. The same source also gave English cipher, which once could mean both "zero" and later "secret code."
