temperature はラテン語 temperatura「ほどよい混合・適度さ」に由来し、temperare「適度にする、調整する」から来ています。語根 temper- には「行きすぎを抑えてちょうどよくする」感覚があり、そこから温度という意味になりました。関連語に temper、temperate があります。
