temperature はラテン語 temperatura「ほどよい混合・適度さ」に由来し、temperare「適度にする、調整する」から来ています。語根 temper- には「行きすぎを抑えてちょうどよくする」感覚があり、そこから温度という意味になりました。関連語に temper、temperate があります。
Temperature comes from Latin temperatura, meaning "proper mixture" or "moderation," from temperare, "to regulate" or "keep within limits." The root temper- carries the idea of making something balanced, not too much and not too little. English later narrowed this general idea of measured balance to the specific sense of heat and cold.
