ラテン語temperamentum「ほどよく混ぜた状態」に由来し、temperare「適度に混ぜる・調整する」から来ています。古い医学で体液の配合が性質を決めると考えられたため、「混ざり具合」が「気質」の意味になりました。関連語はtemper、temperatureです。
