解説 Definition
「reliant」は、他の人や物に依存している、頼っている状態を表す形容詞です。自分だけでは何かを達成できず、外部のサポートや資源を必要としている状況を指します。例えば、技術や他者の助けに頼っている場合に使われます。
Reliant means needing someone or something for support, help, or supply. It is often followed by "on" and used when talking about money, energy, technology, or other people. If someone is heavily reliant on something, they may have difficulty without it.

rely「頼る」が分かれば、その形容詞版が reliant。be reliant on ... で「…に頼っている」とセットで覚えると使いやすいです。independent の反対側に置くと整理しやすく、dependent と近いですが、reliant は「実際に頼りにしている」感じがやや前面に出ます。self-reliant なら逆に「自立した」。technology-reliant society のように、人・金・技術など外部資源なしでは回らない場面を思い浮かべると定着します。

reliant の語源・成り立ち Etymology
「reliant」は rely + -ant で、rely はラテン語 re-「強く」+ ligare「結ぶ」にさかのぼり、「しっかり結びつける」が元の感覚です。ligament や oblige と同じ語根をもち、何かに身を結びつけるイメージから「頼っている・依存している」になりました。
Reliant comes from rely with the ending -ant. Rely goes back through French to Latin religare, made from re- and ligare, meaning "to bind" or "tie." The older image is of being bound closely to something, which later became the idea of depending on it. Related words include ligament, oblige, and religion.
