metro はフランス語 métro の借用で、もとは métropolitain「首都の・大都市の」の短縮形です。この語はギリシャ語 mētēr「母」＋ polis「都市」にさかのぼり、「中心都市に関わるもの」から都市鉄道、つまり「地下鉄」の意味になりました。関連語に metropolis、metropolitan があります。
Metro was borrowed from French métro, a short form of métropolitain. That goes back to Greek roots meaning "mother" and "city," which also appear in metropolis and metropolitan. The idea moved from something connected with a great or central city to the urban railway system of that city.
