人・物・問題の中で、特に重要で中心的なものを表す形容詞です。出来事や影響の規模が大きく、無視できないほど重大だという意味でもよく使われます。

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
major は「ほかより大きく、重みがある」が中心イメージで、ここでは「主要な・重大な」と覚えると定着しやすい。単にサイズが大きい large ではなく、重要性・影響・役割が無視できないことを示す。a major concern、a major change、a major problem、play a major role の組み合わせが頻出。計画表の中で最重要項目だけが太字で大きく示されている場面を思い浮かべるとよい。反対側の minor「小さい、重要でない」と対にすると混同しにくい。

The main subject that a student studies at a college or university. The noun can also refer to a student who is specializing in that subject.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
major はまず「主要な・中心の」という感覚で覚えると、動詞の意味もつながる。大学では多くの科目の中で、自分がいちばん重きを置く分野が one’s major。そこから major in economics で「経済学を専攻する」。study だけだと単に学ぶだが、major in は履修の軸を示すのが違い。minor in「副専攻」と対で覚えると整理しやすい。専攻分野を直接目的語にせず、major in ... の形を取りやすい点にも注意。
