To magnify means to make something look larger or to increase its size in appearance. It can also mean to make something seem more important, serious, or noticeable than it really is. The word is used both in physical and figurative contexts.

magnify はラテン語 magnus「大きい」と facere「作る」にさかのぼり、文字どおり「大きく作る」です。magnitude や magnificent は magn- の仲間、manufacture も facere と同根で、『拡大する』意味が形から見えてきます。
Magnify comes from Latin roots meaning "make great": magnus "great" and facere "to make." The same magn- root appears in magnitude and magnificent, while facere is also seen in manufacture. The original idea was literally "to make larger or greater," which then developed into both physical enlargement and giving greater importance.
