ラテン語 reducere（連れ戻す）から。re-（後ろへ）+ ducere（導く）の合成語。produce（生産する）やeducate（教育する）も同じ-duc-語根を持つ。「元に引き戻す→縮小する」という意味変化を経て「減らす」の意味になった。
From Latin reducere, meaning "to lead back," from re- ("back") and ducere ("to lead"). At first it had the sense of bringing something back to an earlier state. From that idea, it came to mean making something smaller or less.
