deduct はラテン語 deducere に由来し、de-「下へ・離して」+ ducere「導く」から成ります。conduct や induce と同じ ducere の仲間なので、全体から一部を外へ導き出すイメージが、「差し引く」「控除する」という意味につながっています。
Deduct comes from Latin deducere, built from de- "down, away" and ducere "to lead." Its original sense was to lead something away or draw it off from a whole. That developed naturally into the modern idea of taking an amount away; conduct and induce come from the same Latin root.
