「total」はラテン語 totalis に由来し、tot- は totus「全体の、まるごとの」、-al は形容詞語尾です。totality や subtotal に同じ tot があり、部分を足した結果ではなく「全体として見た姿」が total だと考えると、合計の意味がすっと入ります。
