money の語源・成り立ち Etymology
money は古フランス語 monoie を経て、ラテン語 moneta に由来する。これは貨幣鋳造所のあった女神 Juno Moneta の神殿にちなみ、monetary や mint も同根。女神の名がそのまま通貨名になったと知ると、制度としての「お金」が見えてくる。
Money came through Old French monoie from Latin moneta. Moneta was a title of the goddess Juno, and Roman coins were made at her temple, so the place name became the word for coinage. From there, the word widened to mean currency in general. Monetary comes from the same Latin source.
