A factor is one of the causes or influences that affects a result or situation. It is commonly used when explaining why something happens or changes. A situation often has several factors, not just one.

factor は「結果を左右するもの」とまとめると覚えやすい。まず数学の factor＝因数 を思い出すと、「全体を成り立たせる一部分」という感覚がつかめる。そこから risk factor, success factor, environmental factor のように、病気・成功・変化などを生む要素へ広げる。reason が一つの理由を指しやすいのに対し、factor は複数あるうちの一要素になりやすい。key factor, deciding factor, factor in までセットで覚えると定着しやすい。

数学の factor は、掛け算の結果を「作る一員」と捉えると覚えやすい語です。3×4＝12なら、3と4はどちらも twelve の factors、つまり12を割り切れる因数です。Three is a factor of twelve. という be a factor of の型をそのまま覚えましょう。factor a number は「数を因数分解する」、common factor は「共通因数」です。式5xでは5もxも積を作る factor ですが、xの前の5を特に「係数」と呼ぶときは coefficient も使う、と区別すると正確です。
