twelve は古英語 twelf で、twa「2」+ lif「残る」が合わさった語です。つまり「10を数えたあとに2つ残る」で、eleven の「1つ残る」と同じ作りだと思うと、12が独特の形をしている理由がはっきりします。
"Twelve" comes from Old English "twelf." It was originally built from elements meaning "two left" after counting ten, much like "eleven" meant "one left." That old counting pattern explains why "twelve" has a special form instead of looking like a simple combination of "two" and "ten."
