result はラテン語 resultare「跳ね返る・飛び出す」に由来し、re-「後ろへ」+ saltare「跳ぶ」に分けられます。assault や salient も同じ「跳ぶ」の根をもち、原因から何かがぽんと飛び出してくる感じが、「結果として生じる」という意味につながりました。
