Central means being in the middle of something or being very important to it. It is used for places, ideas, systems, or roles. If something is central, it is a main part that other things connect to or depend on.

central の語源・成り立ち Etymology
central はラテン語 centrum「中心」、さらにギリシャ語 kentron「刺す先・中心点」に由来します。centr-「中心」+ -al「〜に関する」で、center や eccentric も同根。もとは『円を刺して定める一点』なので、『中央の』の感覚が立体的に見えてきます。
Central comes from Latin centrum, meaning "center," which itself came from Greek kentron. Kentron originally meant a sharp point or the fixed point used to draw a circle. From that image of the point in the middle, central developed the sense of being at or near the center; center and eccentric are related words.
