解説 Definition
「lateral」は横方向を意味し、物体の横面や位置を指す形容詞です。その位置や動きが中心線から横に広がっている様子のほか、事柄の別の側面を表すときにも用いられます。医学やスポーツなどでは身体の横方向への動きや配置を説明する際に使われます。

lateral はラテン語 lateralis に由来し、latus, later-「側面」+ -al「…に関する」と分けられます。原義は「横の側に属する」で、中心から脇へ広がる向きがそのまま「横方向の」になった語です。関連語は bilateral と unilateral です。
Lateral comes from Latin lateralis, based on latus or later-, meaning "side." It first meant "belonging to the side." From there it developed its modern sense of something moving, placed, or relating to the side rather than the center; bilateral and unilateral are built from the same root.
