ラテン語 litoralis / littoralis「海岸の」に由来し、語根 litus は「浜・岸」を意味します。そこからフランス語経由で英語に入りました。sublittoral も同根で、「岸に接した場所」という原義が、そのまま「沿岸の」という意味につながります。
Littoral comes from Latin litoralis or littoralis, meaning "of the shore," from litus, "shore" or "coast." It entered English through French and kept that coastal sense.
