vertical はフランス語 vertical / 後期ラテン語 verticalis から来て、語源はラテン語 vertex「頂点」です。vertex は vertere「回る・向きを変える」につながり、-al は「…に関する」。関連語は vertex と vortex で、もとは『頭上の頂点』から『垂直』へ意味が広がりました。
