垂直の
解説 Definition
地面や水平線に対して直角をなし、まっすぐ上下へ伸びている向きや状態を表す語。線・柱・壁などの配置を説明するときによく使う。日本語では文脈に応じて「垂直の」「縦の」「垂直に」などと訳され、反対語は horizontal である。
Vertical means going straight up and down, not across. It is used to describe position, direction, or arrangement in space. In charts, design, and daily life, it is the opposite of horizontal.

vertical は「上↕下」にまっすぐ伸びる向きだと、horizontal（横方向）と対で覚えるのがいちばん早い。vertical line, vertical axis, vertical wall, vertical video のように、線・軸・壁・画面など“縦向きかどうか”を言う場面で頻出。vertically なら「垂直に」。似た tall は「高さがある」、upright は「まっすぐ立った」で、vertical はあくまで向き・角度を表す語だと区別すると忘れにくい。
