portrait の語源・成り立ち Etymology
portrait はフランス語 portrait から入り、さらにラテン語 protrahere「前へ引き出す」にさかのぼります。pro-「前へ」+ trahere「引く」で、人物の姿を外へ引き出して見える形にする感覚があり、portray や attract も同じ語根です。
Portrait came from French portrait and goes back to Latin protrahere, meaning "to draw out" or "bring forward." Its parts are pro- "forward" and trahere "draw," a root also seen in portray and attract. The original image was of drawing a person's appearance out into visible form, which led to the modern sense of a painted or photographed likeness.
