「profile」はイタリア語 profilo から入り、pro-「前へ」+ filo「糸・線」(ラテン語 filum) と考えられます。輪郭を“前に引いた一本の線”として捉えた語で、filament や file(一列) も同じ filum 系だと分かると、横顔=輪郭線という発想が見えます。
"Profile" came from Italian "profilo," probably built from elements meaning "forward" and "line," with the second part linked to Latin "filum" meaning thread. The original image is of an outline drawn as a line. That is why the word first referred to a side view or contour before developing wider modern uses.
