解説 Definition
file は、書類やデータをまとめたファイルという意味です。日本語の「ファイル」と同じくコンピューターのデータにも使いますが、紙の書類をまとめたものにもよく使います。
A collection of information stored under one name on a computer, or a folder or organized set of paper documents. The intended sense is usually clear from the surrounding verbs and context.

file は古フランス語 filer「書類を糸に通して保管する」を経て、ラテン語 filum「糸」に由来します。もとは紙を順に“糸でつなぐ”発想で、そこから書類入れや電子ファイルの意味へ広がりました。関連語は filament。
The document sense of file came through French from a verb meaning to arrange papers on a string, ultimately connected with Latin filum, “thread.” Documents were once kept in order by threading them together, so the term came to mean an organized collection of papers and then its container. In modern computing, the same organizing idea was extended to a named collection of digitally stored information.
