taskは古北フランス語tasque／古フランス語tâcheを経て、俗ラテン語*tasca「課された義務・賦課」に由来します。ラテン語taxare「評価する・課す」と結びつき、もとは“上から割り当てられた負担”なので、今の「やるべき仕事」に通じます。関連語はtax、taxation。
Task comes through Old North French tasque and Old French tache from Late Latin tasca, meaning an imposed duty or charge. It is linked with Latin taxare, "to assess" or "to charge," which also gave English tax and taxation. So the word originally carried the idea of a burden assigned from above, and later became a general word for a piece of work to do.
