job は16世紀英語で「ひとかたまりの仕事」を表した語で、起源は不詳ながら俗語的な「ちょっとした作業」から広がったと考えられます。分解できる接辞はなく、jobber や jobbing も同根なので、今の「仕事」も元は「一件の用事」に近い語感でした。
