read は古英語 rǣdan に由来し、当初は「読む」だけでなく「解釈する・助言する」の意味も持っていました。記号の意味をほどいて判断する感覚が核にあり、reader や readable を見ると、read が「意味を取り出す」動作だと腑に落ちます。
`Read` comes from Old English `raedan`, which earlier could mean not only “read” but also “interpret,” “advise,” or “explain.” The basic idea was understanding signs or words and working out their meaning. Over time, the meaning narrowed to the modern act of reading written text, though the older sense survives in the idea of interpretation. Related words include `reader` and `readable`.
