read は、本や手紙の文字を目で追い、内容を頭に入れる「読む」です。本を開いて左から右へ視線を動かす場面と I read a book. をセットにしましょう。read＋読む物の形が基本で、read a letter、read English words、read a sign のように広げられます。現在形・原形は「リード」に近い発音ですが、過去形も同じ read と書いて「レッド」に近く読むのが要注意です。三人称単数では She reads と -s が付く、と押さえると実際の文で迷いません。

read はまず基本の「読む」から広げると覚えやすいです。人が本を読むだけでなく、温度計・メーター・看板の内容をこちらが読むので、「その表示はこう読める」→「〜を示す／〜と書いてある」という意味になります。The thermometer reads 25 degrees. / The sign reads 'No Parking.' が典型。show は見せる、say は言う、read は“書かれた・表示された内容をそのまま表す”語。主語が人ではなく表示物になりやすい点にも注意。
Think of this sense of "read" with things that show words or numbers: a sign, meter, chart, or notice. The pattern is easy to remember: "The meter reads 80" or "The sign reads Closed." It often means the display gives the exact message, more directly than "show" or "say."

古い英語の raedan に由来します。もともとは「助言する」「説明する」「文字を読み取る」などの意味を持ち、そこから文字や文章を読む意味として使われるようになりました。
