「読者」とは、本や新聞、雑誌などを読む人を指す名詞である。著者や出版物が想定する読者層を含み、書いた内容への反応を拠り所にする場合も多い。図書館や電子書籍を使って読む人も含む広い概念である。

reader は read「読む」に「する人」を表す接尾辞 -er が付いた語です。read は古英語 rǣdan にさかのぼり、もとは「助言する・解釈する」の意味も強かったため、reader には字面だけでなく内容を読み解く人という感覚が残っています。関連語は read, riddle。
