scan に -er「するもの」が付いた語で、scan は後期ラテン語 scandere「詩の拍をたどる」を経て、さらに古い「登る」の感覚にさかのぼります。もとは一歩ずつたどるイメージで、文字や画像を順に追って調べる機械だから「スキャナー」です。関連語は scan, ascend。

Scan goes back through late Latin to scandere, meaning "to climb," and it first referred to moving step by step through the rhythm of a verse line.
