action の語源・成り立ち Etymology
「action」はラテン語 actio に由来し、語幹 act- は agere「行う、動かす」、-ion は「こと」を表します。つまり本来は「行為そのもの」で、active や react も同根です。法律で「訴訟」を意味するのは、法廷で起こす正式な行為だからです。
Action comes from Latin actio, from the verb agere, meaning "to do" or "to drive." The root act- shows the idea of doing, and the suffix -ion means an act or process. That is why action first meant "the act of doing something" and later also came to mean a formal legal act, such as a lawsuit.
