A promise is an agreement or statement that you will do something or that something will happen. It is used when talking about trust, responsibility, and future actions. In some contexts, promise also means the sign that someone or something may be successful in the future.

promise はまず動詞の「約束する」を思い出し、その名詞形として覚えると定着しやすい語です。a promise to do で人との「約束」。一方で show promise, have promise の形になると「将来性がある」「見込みがある」の意味に広がります。つまり、まだ実現していないが、先に期待や言葉が置かれている感覚が共通です。plan や possibility よりも、相手の期待を生む前向きさを含む語だと押さえると混同しにくくなります。

A useful extra hook is that it also appears in `show promise` or `have promise`, where the word points to future potential. promise は古フランス語 promesse を経て、ラテン語 promissum「前もって差し出した言葉」に由来します。pro-「前へ」+ mittere「送る」なので、「先に言葉を送って相手を安心させる」が約束。関連語は mission, permit。
Promise came through Old French promesse from Latin promissum, from pro- "forward" and mittere "to send." The original image is of sending words ahead, giving someone your word in advance. From that, it became the usual English word for a pledged statement; related words include mission and permit.
