pledge は古フランス語 plege「保証・人質」を経て英語に入り、さらにフランク語系の「責任を負う」が源と考えられる。相手のために身を立てる感覚から、「保証」がそのまま「約束を担保する言葉」になって「誓約」の意味へ育った。関連語は plight、replevin。
Pledge came from Old French plege, meaning a guarantee, security, or hostage, probably from a Germanic source. At first it referred to something or someone given as a promise of responsibility. From that, it developed into the sense of a formal promise or commitment.
