この語は one’s word などの形で、約束、誓約、保証の意味を表す。単なる発言ではなく、相手に対して責任を持って言い切る言葉という含みがあり、信頼や誠実さと結び付いて使われる。keep one’s word で「約束を守る」となる。

普段の word は「言葉」だが、one’s word になると「その人が口にしたこと全体」＝責任を伴う発言、そこから「約束」の意味に寄ると覚える。give one’s word なら約束する、keep one’s word なら約束を守る、break one’s word なら破る。promise より少し重く、「言った以上は信用がかかる」という響きがある。単なる say ではなく、人格や信頼と結び付く word だと整理すると残りやすい。
