worldは古英語woruldで、wer「人」+ ald「年齢・時代」が合わさった語です。直訳は「人の時代」で、もとは地球そのものより「人間が生きるこの世」を指したため、worldが社会や世間の意味も持つ理由が分かります。werewolfのwereとoldが同じ仲間です。
"World" comes from Old English "woruld," made from elements meaning "man" and "age" or "time." Its earliest sense was close to "the age of human beings" or "the human world," not just the planet itself. That is why "world" can still mean human society or ordinary life.
