worldは古英語woruldで、wer「人」+ ald「年齢・時代」が合わさった語です。直訳は「人の時代」で、もとは地球そのものより「人間が生きるこの世」を指したため、worldが社会や世間の意味も持つ理由が分かります。werewolfのwereとoldが同じ仲間です。
