物や人の周囲にあること、周辺で起こることを表す前置詞・副詞。動作がその場のあちこちで行われることや、見回すように向きを変えることも示す。数量や時刻の前では「およそ」「だいたい」の意味で概数を表す、日常会話で非常によく使われる基本語。
Around can mean on every side of something or in many parts of an area. It is used for movement, position, or direction, such as going around a building or looking around a room. It can also mean approximately when talking about numbers or time.

around は a-（古い on「…の周りに」）+ round「円, 回転」からできた語で、中英語で「ぐるりと周囲に」の形が固まりました。核は「円を描くように取り巻く」感覚なので、around が「周辺」や「その辺一帯」を表すのも自然です。関連語は round, surround。
Around was formed from a- and round, with the older prefix a- linked to the sense of "on" or "in a surrounding position." In Middle English it became the usual form for the idea of moving or being in a circle around something. From that image, it naturally developed broader uses for nearby space or the general area.
