five は古英語 fif、さらにゲルマン祖語を経て印欧祖語 penkwe に由来する数詞です。語根 penkwe は形を変えて fifty や fifteen、ギリシャ語系の penta- にも残り、五という核が各語に生き続けているのが見えてきます。
