fifty は古英語 fiftig からで、five に当たる語幹と「十のまとまり」を表す -ty が結びついた形です。fifteen や fifth も同じ fif- をもち、「5を軸に数を組み立てる」感覚がそのまま見えます。
Fifty comes from Old English fiftig. It joins the same base seen in five with the old number ending -ty, which meant "groups of ten." Related words such as fifteen and fifth show the same fif- root used in different number patterns.
