「fifteen」は five と -teen の複合語で、古英語 fiftene にさかのぼる。語幹 fif- は five や fifty と同根で、-teen は「10を加えた」を表す。だから fifteen は文字どおり「5に10を足した数」で、英語の数詞の仕組みがそのまま見える。
Fifteen comes from Old English fiftene, built from five and the old ending -teen. That ending means "ten added," so the word originally meant "five and ten." Its form shows the old structure of English number words very clearly. It is closely related to five and fifty, which share the same root.
