解説 Definition
十に四を加えた数で、13の次、15の前に当たる基本的な数詞。年齢、日付、数量、距離などを表すときに使われ、英語では単独でも使えるほか、名詞の前に置いて数を示す形容詞的な働きもする。日常会話から算数まで幅広く現れる。

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
four + -teen で「10に4を足した数」と見れば覚えやすいです。まず four を軸にし、-teen が付くと 13〜19 の仲間だとまとめて整理すると定着します。特に forty とつづりも音も近いので混同注意。fourteen は「14」、forty は「40」です。年齢や日付で頻出で、I'm fourteen.、fourteen days、chapter fourteen のように、単独でも名詞の前でもよく使います。聞き取りでは fourteen は後半がやや強く、forty は前半が強め、と意識すると区別しやすいです。
