four は古英語 feower を経て、さらに印欧祖語 *kwetwores にさかのぼる数詞です。分解語というより語幹そのものが「4」で、forty や fourteen、ラテン系の quadri- にも同じ祖先が見え、「4」が言語ごとに姿を変えたとわかります。
