one, two, three の次に来る基本の数として、まず並びで固定すると覚えやすい語です。派生語の fourth（4番目）, fourteen（14）, forty（40）も同じ four が土台なので、まとめて見ると記憶が強まります。会話では four years old, four people, four days など数量をそのまま前に置く形が頻出。つづりは for（〜のために）や fore（前方の）と紛れやすいので、数字の4だけが four と切り分けて覚えるのがコツです。

four は古英語 feower を経て、さらに印欧祖語 *kwetwores にさかのぼる数詞です。分解語というより語幹そのものが「4」で、forty や fourteen、ラテン系の quadri- にも同じ祖先が見え、「4」が言語ごとに姿を変えたとわかります。
