Already means before now, before a particular time, or sooner than expected. It is used when something has happened earlier than the speaker may have expected or when the result is finished. It often appears with present perfect and past actions.

already は ready を足場にすると覚えやすい語です。『準備OK＝その段階にもう入っている』という感覚で、すでに・もうを結びつけます。yet が否定文・疑問文で『まだ』寄りなのに対し、already は肯定文で『もう』をはっきり出すのが基本。I’ve already finished. のように完了形と特に相性がよく、have/has の後ろでよく見ます。『え、もう？』という少し驚きの空気を帯びることもある、とセットで覚えると残りやすいです。

already は all + ready が縮まった形で、もとは「すっかり準備ができて」の意味でした。そこから「もうその状態に達している」へ進み、ready や readiness と並べると、「準備完了」が「すでに」に変わった筋道が見えます。
Already comes from all and ready, and it originally meant something like "completely prepared." Ready has the sense of being in a finished or prepared state. From "fully ready," the meaning shifted to "by this time" or "before now," which is the usual modern sense.
