順序、順番
解説 Definition
order は、物事の並び方や進む順番、整った状態を表す名詞。時間順やアルファベット順のような配列を示すほか、混乱していない秩序ある状態という意味でも使われる。作業手順や段取りの順序を述べるときにも用いられる基本語である。
Order means the way things are arranged or the sequence in which they happen. It is used when talking about position, steps, or organization. Keeping things in order means they are arranged clearly and correctly.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
order はまず「ばらばらでなく、きちんと並んだ状態」を核に置くと覚えやすい。word order は語の並び順、alphabetical order はアルファベット順、in the right order は正しい順番。sequence が単に連続の流れを指しやすいのに対し、order は「どう整然と並んでいるか」まで含みやすい。動詞の order「注文する」と混同しやすいが、名詞では「並び・秩序」を先に固定すると、out of order のような「順序が乱れた状態」も一緒に覚えられる。
Remember `order` as the idea of things being arranged neatly, not randomly. That helps with phrases like `word order`, `alphabetical order`, and `in the right order`. This also separates it from the verb `order` meaning to ask for something.
例文
Put the cards in order.

The names are in order.
名前は順番に並んでいます。
This order is easy.

注文
/ verb 動詞 注文する (意味 2)
解説 Definition
店やレストランで品物や料理を頼むこと、またはその依頼内容を表す名詞です。客が何をほしいかを伝える場面でよく使います。支払い前後を問わず使え、電話やネットで商品を申し込むときの「注文」にも自然に使われます。
A request for food, drinks, or goods from a restaurant or business. It can also mean the details of what a customer has asked to receive.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
order「注文」は、店に『これをください』と正式に頼んだ内容だと覚えるとよいです。place an order は「注文を入れる」、your order will arrive は「あなたの注文品が届く」。word order「語順」の order とは同じ単語ですが、この行では並び順ではなく、店や通販に出した依頼そのものが主役です。レストランで店員が What is your order? と聞く場面を思い浮かべると、「注文」という名詞の感じが残ります。
Picture telling a shop or restaurant exactly what you want: that request is your order. Learn 'place an order' as a useful phrase for making this request.
例文
I'd like to place an order for two pizzas.
ピザを2枚注文したいです。
Your order will arrive tomorrow.
ご注文の商品は明日届きます。
There was a mistake in my order.
私の注文に間違いがありました。
命令
(意味 3)
解説 Definition
人に何かをするよう強く指示すること、またはその指示内容を表す名詞です。上司・教師・警察・裁判所など、権限のある立場からの指示でよく使われます。単なる助言より強制力や従うべき感じが強い語です。
A strong instruction telling someone what they must do. It usually comes from someone with authority and is expected to be obeyed.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
order「命令」は、権限のある人が『こうしなさい』と行動を決めて出す指示だと覚えるとよいです。follow an order は命令に従う、a direct order は直接の命令。word order「語順」や order「注文」と同じ形ですが、この行では並びや買い物ではなく、相手を動かす強い指示が主役です。request「依頼」よりも断りにくく、上司・軍隊・警察・裁判所などの場面を思い浮かべると定着します。
Imagine a person in authority saying, 'You must do this.' Connect that situation with 'give an order' and 'follow an order,' remembering that it carries more force than a request.
例文
The king gave an order.
王様は命令を出しました。
This order is from the teacher.
これは先生からの命令です。
She said no to the order.
彼女はその命令を断りました。

order の語源・成り立ち Etymology
order はラテン語 ordo / ordin-「列・配列」に由来し、核になる語根 ordin- は「整えて並べる」です。ordinary や ordain も同根で、物事をきちんと並べることから「秩序」だけでなく、頼んで整えてもらう「注文」の意味まで伸びたとわかります。
Order comes from Latin ordo, ordin-, meaning "row," "arrangement," or "sequence." The core idea was putting things in a proper line or structure, and the same root appears in ordinary and ordain. From this sense of arranging things well, English developed meanings like "regular arrangement" and also "a request to have something prepared."
